Choosing The Right Carpet Material

Synthetic fibres are cheaper and more stain resistant; natural fibres cost more but last longer. Here's the honest rundown.

Polypropylene

A good choice if you're on a budget, as it's generally cheap. It feels soft to the touch and is stain resistant — many are even bleach cleanable. But it attracts oil, so oil-based stains can be tough to remove.

Polyester

Popular because it looks and feels most like wool, and usually used in a blend with real wool. Stain resistance is a major benefit, and it's sometimes made from recycled plastic bottles, so it can be an eco-friendly option.

Nylon

Also known as polyamide — the most durable of the synthetic fibres. It can stretch without losing its shape, making it a good choice for rooms where furniture is often moved around, such as dining rooms.

Wool

Natural, durable, and provides good heat and sound insulation. It can absorb and release moisture, controlling humidity. It costs more than synthetics, colours can fade in constant sunlight, and it's popular with carpet moths and beetles.

Sisal & other natural fibres

Plant-based materials are growing in popularity for their stylish, contemporary look. Sisal is hard-wearing but rough underfoot and stains easily. Jute is softer but less durable — better for bedrooms. Seagrass resists stains but takes little dye. Coir is durable and low-maintenance but rough — best where you won't be barefoot.
